How do I know what level I am in if I've never danced at Stepping Out before?

We offer an Introductory Special which includes a ½ hour private lesson & personal evaluation, a consultation with our dance advisor, a single group class, and dance party. We suggest you take advantage of this Special offer, during which time instructors and our dance advisor can recommend the appropriate level of dance for you. You may be at a different level for each of the different dances. The class schedule can be confusing for first time students, so let us do the work for you, and put you on the correct footing for your dance education.

Do I need a partner?

No, you may come by yourself or with a Partner. Stepping Out's method is to teach lead and follow basics and patterns, and rotate partners throughout the class hour. You will never be without a partner for more than one or two rotations. If you prefer to remain with one partner that you have registered with, simply let the instructor know at the beginning of the cycle. You may then wave on the person rotating to the next partner in front of you. If possible, we do recommend rotating; remaining with one partner the entire time may encourage idiosyncratic habits that you may not be aware of.  Plus, it's fun to meet and learn from your fellow students.. Your partner may not be doing something correctly, but you won't know if you don't have experience dancing with others.

What do I wear?

As a first-timer, street shoes are fine. However, we do recommend leather-soled shoes that cover the entire foot. Rubber soled shoes will stick to the floor; sandals and sling-backs will not give you the support you may need for dancing. Once you have decided to stick with it, you may want to purchase dance shoes. There are specific dance shoes designed for this type of dancing.  With heals that are better placed for balance, suede soles for easy movement on hardwood floors, and special designs that keep them glued to your feet the entire time your dancing.

We recommend comfortable, cotton clothing. Many people come directly from work and bring a quick change with them.

How long will it take before I will feel comfortable to go out dancing?

You can go out dancing right away and we encourage this.  The more you practice the better you will become! Depending on your goals it usually takes a few months to feel truly comfortable and confident on the dance floor. We encourage you to practice as much as possible, go out, and have fun. We provide daily practice sessions, run by an instructor, for you to take your first dance steps out on the floor. There are plenty of dance venues around town as well.

How long do I remain at the same level?

A strong foundation is key to your development and progress as a dancer.  Before graduating to a new level, you should be secure in the entire syllabus of material. The Syllabus for each dance can be found by navigating to the dance style pages.  Here you'll find all the steps that are used and the coordinating levels at which they are taught.  You can also get your own copy of these step lists from the front desk.  Some dances, which are more demanding, will require more time.  You may always check with your instructor at the end of a course cycle for a personal evaluation.
